St. Cloud’s roots trace back to French settlers, who named the city after Saint Cloud, France, home to Napoleon’s favorite palace. Originally three towns (Upper, Middle, and Lower), the communities were united in 1856, growing alongside railroads and thriving granite quarries.
Today, the city honors its past with nearly 6,000 historic structures, including the Minnesota Correctional Facility’s iconic 1.5-mile granite wall, built with stone from the state’s oldest quarry.
