816 W. St. Germain

The building at 816 W St Germain Street was built in 1929. Once known as the Granite Exchange, this 6 story building is the tallest one in downtown St. Cloud. Designed by Louis Pinault, the first 4 floors were built in 1929, and the additional upper floors were added in 1937. The building is faced with cream colored brick reinforced with concrete. One fun fact is the entire building was heated by using steam. The St. Cloud Development Corporation built the building specifically for housing firms engaged in granite exchanges. Two stores were located on the first floor, and the remaining upper floors were designed as offices and suites.

The vision for the space was never realized and the space was used for business and offices instead. The name Granite Exchange stuck though. Over the years, there have been a variety of building business tenants including insurance companies, physicians, attorneys, contractors, finance corporations, and a power company. Within the last decade, the building has been home to a dental prosthodontics office, along with other dentistry’s and a law office.
